About Phil
Plain-English help for people with a final salary pension, from someone who has spent many years on the other side of the advice process.

Phillip Handley, Chartered Financial Adviser (LIBF), Adv DipFA
I have worked in financial advice for 24 years. For many years I advised people on transferring out of defined benefit and final salary pensions, so I know how the process works, what the regulator expects, and what people often wish they had known at the start.
Today I don't give defined benefit pension transfer advice. Instead, I offer a free, no-obligation chat that explains, in general terms, how defined benefit pensions, transfer values and the advice process work. I won't tell you whether a transfer is right for you. That's a decision for you, and for a regulated adviser if you choose to take advice.
If you'd like regulated advice and your transfer value is £50,000 or more, I can introduce you to an FCA-authorised firm that holds the pension transfer permission. Arthur Browns may receive a fee from the firm we introduce you to if you become their client.
I can also advise directly on older pensions with guaranteed annuity rates through Arthur Browns. Read more about GARs.
How I work
- I listen first. Every pension and every family is different, so I start by understanding what you'd like to know.
- I keep it plain. No jargon, and no pressure to do anything.
- I'm straight with you about the rules. The FCA starts from the position that a transfer is unlikely to be suitable for most people. I'll explain why.
- You stay in control. Many people decide to leave their pension where it is, and that's a perfectly good outcome.
